The confusion worth clearing up

Wegovy and Ozempic are the same molecule. They differ in what they are approved to treat, which is what decides how an insurer handles them.

The class, the molecule and the brand name are three different levels, and most “versus” questions in this category dissolve once they are separated — which level of that Wegovy belongs to, and what it is being compared against is the thing worth settling first.

Is Wegovy a GLP-1?

Yes. Wegovy is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, approved for chronic weight management and given as a weekly injection or daily tablet. "GLP-1" is the drug class; semaglutide is the molecule; Wegovy is the brand name that molecule is sold under for this use.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic and Rybelsus?

They are the same molecule — semaglutide — approved for different uses. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management; Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, and Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes. That difference is not pharmacological, but it decides how an insurer treats each one, which is usually the practical question hiding inside "which is better".

Do you need a prescription for Wegovy?

Yes, in the United States, as for every GLP-1 receptor agonist. Anything sold as Wegovy without a prescription is not Wegovy, whatever the label says — and a product bought outside the prescribing chain carries none of the manufacturing verification the approved product does.
