Is there a GLP-1 pill?
Direct answer
What you need to know
Evidence strength: StrongYes — three of them, and they are the real thing. Rybelsus (oral semaglutide, for type 2 diabetes), Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, for weight management), and Foundayo (orforglipron, approved April 2026) are FDA-approved GLP-1 receptor agonists you swallow. All three require a prescription. This is the one non-injectable format that genuinely delivers the medication — patches, gummies and drops do not.
Key takeaways
- Three approved oral GLP-1 medications exist, and all are prescription-only.
- They come in two chemically different kinds, which changes how you take them daily.
- In trials the tablets produced less weight loss than the injections, not more.
- Wegovy tablets are the cheapest published self-pay route to any approved GLP-1.
Important limitation: The trial figures below come from separate studies with different populations and durations. They are not a head-to-head comparison, and a difference between two trials is weaker evidence than a difference measured within one.
Next action: If injections are the barrier, this is the conversation to have with a prescriber. Our provider directory records who prescribes which products.

The three approved oral GLP-1 medications
| Product | Molecule | Approved for | Self-pay from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy tablets | Oral semaglutide (peptide) | Chronic weight management | $149/mo |
| Rybelsus | Oral semaglutide (peptide) | Type 2 diabetes | Not published |
| Foundayo | Orforglipron (non-peptide small molecule) | Chronic weight management | Not published |
Two of those cells say “not published” because, as of 2026-07-25, no manufacturer self-pay price had been published for them. We would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a figure we cannot source.
The two kinds of GLP-1 pill, and why it matters at breakfast
The three products are not chemically equivalent, and the difference is felt daily rather than in a laboratory. Semaglutide is a peptide — a large molecule that the stomach is very good at destroying, which is why the oral versions are formulated to survive the journey and why their labels specify an empty stomach and a waiting period before food, drink, or other medicines.
Orforglipron is a non-peptide small molecule, and that is the whole point of it. It is not a peptide that has to be protected, so it carries no food or water timing restriction. For anyone who has tried to organise a morning around a fasting window, that is a meaningful difference — arguably a larger one than the gap in the trial numbers below.
Do the pills work as well as the injections?
On the published trial results, no — and this is the question the format decision usually turns on, so it is worth being direct about it.
| Product | Format | Weight reductionmean, at the headline dose | Trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide (Wegovy) | Injection | 14.9% | STEP 1, NEJM 2021 · N=1,961 · 68 weeks |
| Tirzepatide (Zepbound) | Injection | 22.5% | SURMOUNT-1, NEJM 2022 · N=2,539 · 72 weeks |
| Oral semaglutide (Wegovy pill) | Tablet | 13.6% | OASIS 4 · N=307 · 64 weeks |
| Orforglipron (Foundayo) | Tablet | 12.4% | ATTAIN-1 · N>3,100 · 72 weeks |
The pill is not a weaker version of the same thing you were going to be prescribed. It is a different product with its own trial, and choosing it is a trade of convenience against the largest published effect.
Two honest caveats about reading that table. These are separate trials, so the differences between rows are softer evidence than a within-trial comparison would be. And a medication you will actually take every week beats one you will abandon — a tablet you tolerate is worth more than an injection you stop. That is a conversation for your prescriber, not a table.
What a GLP-1 pill costs
At $149 a month, Wegovy tablets bought direct from the manufacturer are the lowest published self-pay price for any FDA-approved medication in this class — below the injection pens of the same drug, and below every compounded telehealth subscription total we were able to derive. The full comparison, with membership fees added to medication prices, is on the cheapest way to get a GLP-1.
“GLP-1 pills” that are not GLP-1 pills
Because a real GLP-1 tablet now exists, the word “pill” has become useful cover for products that contain none. A capsule sold without a prescription is not one of the three products above, whatever the label implies. The same test that works everywhere else in this category works here: if you can buy it without a prescription, it is not a GLP-1 medication. See what supplement products actually contain.
Before you buy anything described as a GLP-1 pill
- All three approved oral products are prescription-only and dispensed by a pharmacy. There is no legitimate route that skips the prescription.
- Compounded oral semaglutide is not an FDA-approved product and is not reviewed for identity, purity, or strength.
- Take the administration instructions from the label on your own prescription, not from a guide online. They differ between these products, which is precisely the point of this page.
